I have to do a debate for school and this one of the questions. I am not sure how to answer this question because I am against the legalization of prostitution.
Well, the FIRST point you can make and win the debate right away is that Prostitution is NOT illegal in Vancouver or anywhere else in Canada for that matter. It never has been in the first place therefore the point is moot and the debate is over. Point and match to YOU.
What is illegal is communicating for the purposes of prostitution which means that people can be charge for arranging the act, arranging it in any way either through speaking, motions, text, sign language…… The actual act of having sex for money or paying for sex has never been illegal but of course if you can't communicate to arrange it then you can't do it, or so the law feels.
Look up prostitution laws in Canada and start your argument from there. If the main premis of the argument/debate is flawed then go at it from that angle.

Randy covered the legal aspects quite well. Whether you agree or disagree with prostitution is one thing, this is a school project and you have to put your objective hat on to argue the case (no matter what your personal feelings are). Here are some examples of positive points if Prostitution was approved for Vancouver 2010
- The visitors to Vancouver would have a specific (better) location to visit a prostitute than the seedy back alleys of the East end (where we don't want visitors to go).
- The Prostitutes (both male/female) can be registered and monitored for health issues. They would have easier access to medical professions.
- It would take away the action from PIMPS.
- The girls themselves would have more money if pimps were not involved.
- If registered, they would be paying income tax.
- GST would probably be added on . . more revenue back to government.
- It would give some dignity back to the sex trade workers by getting them off the street.
- The johns can be monitored and it would become a safer work site for the prostitutes.
At the end of the day, prostitution will take place during the Olympics and it would be far better if legalized than have to seek it out in dirty back alleys or street corners. It would be safer for both sex worker and client.
