Vancouver 2010: Jean Chretien speaks about the winning bid

Vancouver, British Columbia is awarded the 2010 Olympic Winter Games on Wednesday, July 2, 2003. The crowd goes wild both at the announcement ceremony in Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC. and in Vancouver and Whistler as people celebrate the announcement. People run through the streets waving Olympic flags and honking car horns in celebration. Prime Minister Jean Chretien, in Prague, speaks to a CTV reporter about the successful bid.

    On the first ballot, Pyeongchang was ahead of Vancouver 53-40, eliminating Salzburg which had 16. The second ballot, all 16 of Salzburg’s votes went to Vancouver, and that’s how Canada won its second Winter Games since Calgary ‘88

    Well, you have to consider it’s the former Soviet Union. Never before have the Winter Games cost $12-billion, but that’s only because Sochi has no existing venues and a lack of infrastructure.

    And with regards to our $1.3 billion, that has since been inflated to $1.6 billion…not including $600-million in venues, $2-billion Canada Line, $900-million convention centre, $700-million Sea-to-Sky highway, $300-million athletes villages, $1.5-billion in YVR airport improvements, etc.
