Vancouver’s convention centre a world-class jewel
Updated: Thu Apr. 02 2009 20:18:03
ctvbc.ca
After years of delays and budget overruns, Vancouver’s brand new convention centre will open its doors on Friday.
Jutting into Coal Harbour in downtown Vancouver it is the new jewel on Vancouver’s waterfront, and the man charged with running it says it is unique.
“I think of Hong Kong, Geneva… other world-class, potentially Cape Town, would compare to it. But this doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world,” said Warren Buckley, the convention centre’s chief executive officer.
Not many convention centres can offer delegates and visitors stunning views like the North Shore Mountains. Even fewer would use more than two acres of hemlock for interior walls, or have a living roof with 400,000 plants and grasses.
And amongst its 55,000 square feet, and dramatic five-storey ceiling is Canada’s largest ballroom.
But such beauty doesn’t come cheap. The final price tag is thought to be $883 million, double the original estimate, though Buckley said that figure is too high.
“That budget was set two years ago. We will come under that budget… and that’s it,” he said.
Soaring costs for construction materials and labour are blamed on the increased cost.
During the 2010 Olympics official broadcasters from around the world like CTV will be drawing attention to the stunning view. The building will house the media centre as they show off Vancouver to the world.
Already, the new facility is drawing admiring glances, especially from the 90 convention planners from across North America who are attending the opening.
One, Kerry Crockett, is from Georgia.
“My group got to do the float plane tours, we got to see some of your wonderful clouds,” she laughed. “The coastline is really beautiful.”
And she’s now booked two conventions — one in 2012 and the other in 2018.
She’s not alone.
So far, 184 events are booked at the new centre, all the way into 2018. That’s expected to bring $2 billion to our economy.

At exactly one year before the Vancouver 2010 ceremonies begin Seabus, West Coast Express, Canada Place and Grouse Mountain celebrate in their own unique ways.
You hear the Seabus sound off first, followed by Canada Place’s horn. The Seabus sound’s it’s horn a second time, and ever quietly you hear the ringing of the West Coast Express train bell. While in time lapse (it took 20 minutes), you see skiers with flares race down the Grouse Mountain peak and the “cut” before opening 24hrs for 3 days non-stop.
I can’t wait for the opening ceremonies to begin!

Bus signs, Six OClock Shout kick off the Countdown 2 Gold!
Thursday, February 12th is an important date for Metro Vancouver. It marks the start of the one year countdown to the beginning of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Such a milestone deserves a little noise or a lot of noise. So at 6 pm, Thursday, Feb. 12, all SkyTrain passengers will be encouraged to MAKE SOME NOISE. A pre-recorded announcement just prior to 6 pm will remind people to take part. Horns, cowbells, tambourines, even those little paper things you blow at parties that roll out and annoy people next to you by tickling them under the nose will be welcome.
All West Coast Express trains en route at the time will also blow their whistles at 6 pm, so people living and working along the WCE route should be aware that the whistles will sound in an unusual circumstance. Both SeaBuses will also join in the noisy event, blasting their horns at four bells of the first dog watch.
Coast Mountain Buses will help get into the Olympic Spirit, too. Beginning Thursday, the route destination signs will alternate with the words, Countdown 2 Gold. As the year progresses, the messages Go Team Canada and Go Canada Go will also be displayed.
The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games provide a unique opportunity for Metro Vancouver to welcome the world, and TransLink and its family of companies are excited and honoured to be part of it.

David Atkins, the newly appointed Executive Producer for Vancouver 2010s Olympic Ceremonies Team isnt giving anything away. No hints, its too early in the process. What viewers can be sure of, though, is that it will be exciting. Theres no shortage of talent in Canada, said Atkins. In fact, theres an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Canadas resource of performers, artists and cultural practitioners. The ceremonies will profile and represent the best of these.
CREATING A CEREMONIES ADDICTION
The Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies strive to capture the spirit and unique personality of the host city, province and country, while providing inspiring Olympic and Paralympic messages and entertaining billions world wide.
Atkins, who was the Executive Producer and Artistic Director of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Summer Games ceremonies as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 15 th Asian Games in Doha in 2006, admits that working on the Olympic Games becomes a bit addictive. The pressure is quite extraordinary on every member of the team. These are once-only events. Its a highly-charged experience with years of work coming down to one night, one time, and one place.
Its not surprising, then, that the majority of the Ceremonies Team has worked on past Games Ceremonies, including Calgary 1988, Sydney 2000 and Torino 2006. Marti Kulich, VANOCs Program Director, Ceremonies and Production Services, noted that it is not just a group of individuals but truly a team that will produce the 2010 Olympic Ceremonies. And what a team.
Ceremonies Creative Team members include Jacques Lemay, Ian Pool, and Catherine Ugwu, all of whom have previously worked on Olympic, Commonwealth and other international Games. Prominent Canadian music scene legends, Bruce Allen, Sam Feldman and Dan Fraser, are also on board. Ignatius Jones, Artistic Director of the 15th Asian Games Ceremonies, as well as Érick Villeneuve, acclaimed Director and Special Visual Effects Designer round out the 10-member team along with Atkins and Kulich.

B.C. Place Stadium, which blew its top during a storm last year, may be getting a whole new roof in time for the 2010 Olympics.
B.C. Pavilion Corp., which runs the stadium in downtown Vancouver, says it’s considering a new roof after a storm ripped a hole in the existing Teflon, air-supported covering and building staff overinflated it.
PavCo chairman David Podmore says no decision has been made on whether the new roof will be retractable, inflatable or open at the centre.
NDP tourism critic Norm MacDonald is raising concerns about the costs involved, saying the budget for the Vancouver convention centre expansion has almost doubled.
But Podmore says any costs linked to the upgrades will be recovered through the sale of property around the facility to condominium developers.
The stadium will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2010 Olympics.
