A CHALLENGE AND A PROMISE

Own the Podium 2010 is a challenge to our nation to step up and show the world its very best. It is an unprecedented commitment to Canadian winter sport that spans virtually every discipline and region. It is a promise to our athletes that they will have solid support from training ground to finish line. The initiative is a collaborative effort supported by all of Canadas winter national sport organizations (NSOs) and the major winter sport funding partners, including Sport Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), the Calgary Olympic Development ociation (CODA), the Government of British Columbia, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), and several of VANOCs corporate sponsors.

Patrick Chan – Canadian Olympic Figure Skater: Vancouver 2010

Posted in vancouver 2010

Like a relentless boxer, Patrick Chan is determined to pick himself off the mat and deliver his own knockout punch.

Time is something the 18-year-old has. Last year, Chan won the Canadian championships for the first time in only his third opportunity at the senior level. Now that Jeffrey Buttle retired following his gold medal at the 2008 world championships, Chan is Canada’s men’s figure skating heavyweight.

“It’s good for me mentally because I feel very confident,” he said. “I was the only men’s singles Canadian skater to be in the Grand Prix finals. The more I go to these competitions, the more experience and confidence I get. That’ll be a plus when I got to nationals. I’ll step on the ice in practice and in the warm up, knowing that I have much more experience that the others.”

Chan knows he now has centre stage. And while he tries to downplay it, he wants to be king of the ring.

“I try not to think about the extra stress,” he said. “I just want to go and treat it as if it I didn’t even win a medal last year. People are going to be watching me of course, but I have to go and show what I have to do.

“I’ll and keep focused and not get carried away. I’m there to do a job.”
