Does anyone else agree with me that Joe Sakic is the perfect candidate to be the captain of the olympic team in Vancouver 2010. Also any suggestions on who else might be captain would be nice as well.
no disrespect but he shouldn't be playing on team canada, someone like j. toews deserves the opportunity. Joe is too washed up to play for canada.

If Sakic is still playing at a decently high level (if at all) I'd have to imagine he'd be the captain. However, considering he hardly even played this past year I wouldn't automatically assume he'll be on the team. If he's not, Iginla almost certainly will be the captain. Shane Doan would be another guy who'd get some consideration.

Yzerman is running it. He and Sakic are real good pals. I guarantee that he'll be the captain based off that alone. even though the Wings and Av's hated each other, Joe and Stevie got along great.

Sakic will be the Captain if he plays, Iginla will be if Joe Sakic doesn't play.
LITY and Bob gave their opinions on the topic… you don't need to hear any other opinion when they give their own.

If Joe chooses to play on the team (he was one of the players guaranteed a spot if he wants it), he will be captain. It will not matter how well he is playing, the determination, grit and experience he brings to the table is irreplaceable.
If Sakic is retired by that point, or chooses not to play, it will most likely either be Iginla or Niedermayer. Pronger would be on that list as well, but I would refuse to watch the games if he was chosen over Iginla or Niedermayer.
This question now rocks – In his last full season, Sakic scored 100 points (06-07). The last two seasons, injuries have been the only thing stopping him. He has still averaged almost a point a game over those two years. Not what I would call washed up.

Joe Sakic has already been informed that if he plays in the NHL next year, and he agrees to participate in Vancouver, he WILL be the captain. Otherwise, Jarome Iginla has already been informed that he will be the captain.
Sakic has apparently told the new Colorado GM that he hasn't made up his mind about next year, nor has he had any further discussions with Hockey Canada.
Unfortunately for our good friend Bob, Hockey Canada has already decided whgo will wear the C's and A's in Vancouver…and none of them were born in Nova Scotia

Sakic is the coolest guy ever. Thanks for the 2 points.

really it depends on how well he's recovered. i think iginla should get it – he can keep up with everyone else for sure and be able to contribute a considerable amount

Sakic would be the perfect candidate IF he is playing well and able to make a strong contribution on the ice. His off ice leadership isn't a question but he's getting a little long in the tooth and whether he's going to have the legs to play at the level needed to win gold is open for debate. He might view the opportunity as his last gasp and raise his game to heights that he's never before reached. Joe's a Burnaby boy (suburb of Vancouver) so he would indeed be a perfect fit.

The list:
1) Sakic
2) Iginla
That's the list. End of discussion. As noted, young 'uns from the eastern provinces aren't part of the discussion.
