METRO VANCOUVER – One of the biggest challenges of recording more than 100 anthems for the 2010 Winter Olympics is finding each one’s emotional core, conductor Bramwell Tovey said Monday at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey.
“We have to rummage around and try and get inside each one,” Tovey told the media prior to a recording session that included O Canada.
“It’s just the same as digging inside Beethoven – of trying to find what the core of Beethoven is all about. With each national anthem we have to discover what the core is.”
Over three days ending today, Tovey conducted 73 musicians in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for a recording session organized by Vanoc, the organizing committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Although about 85 countries are expected to compete in 2010, Vanoc was recording anthems for all countries with Winter Olympic organizing committees in case more attend.
If approved next spring by the various Winter Olympic organizing committees, the versions recorded by VSO will be played during the gold medal presentations and when the national Olympic delegations arrive at the Olympic Village. They’re all instrumental and contain no lyrics.
Under Tovey, the VSO has won its first Grammy and Juno awards.
Playing an anthem isn’t as simple as just following the notes. Anthems for countries such as Madagascar and Ethiopia required new arrangements for a full orchestra. The Spanish anthem was marked on the score to be played at a pulse of almost one a second – yet the Spanish government’s website said it should be played at two pulses a second.
“I feel a little bit like a one-man United Nations,” he said. “The biggest worry is that you’re going to play an anthem and you’re not going to please the country where the anthem come from.”
Tovey praised the Brazilian national anthem, comparing it to a sparkling overture by Gioachino Rossini.
Tovey said he wasn’t concerned about playing the U.S. national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. The version played during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens wasn’t considered stirring enough by some Americans.
“I conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic as the principal guest conductor at the Hollywood Bowl and every single concert at the Hollywood Bowl begins with The Star-Spangled Banner,” he said. “So I’m used to doing that.”
But the first time he conducted the LA Philharmonic, he got a quick education about how patriotic Americans are about their anthem.
“I asked the orchestra if we could rehearse it,” said Tovey. “They actually stood to rehearse it, which I found astonishing. Certainly in Canada, we don’t stand to rehearse the national anthem – we stand for the actual event.

Three powerful words known to all Canadians will be forever linked with Olympic and Paralympic athletic achievement, with the 2010 Winter Games and with Canada. With Glowing Hearts was announced as the motto for the 2010 Winter Games by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).
With Glowing Hearts is connected and familiar to all Canadians through our anthem O Canada and it also embodies what it takes to be an Olympic or Paralympic athlete, said John Furlong, VANOC Chief Executive Officer. It embodies the emotions every athlete will feel — no matter where they are from or what flag they stand under — when they have the honour to represent their own country on the worlds grandest international stage in 2010.
With Glowing Hearts captures in a few simple, time-honoured words what it means to be Canadian, the deep pride we have in our country and who we are. Its our hope that Canadians will see themselves in these words. They reflect our personality, our values as a country and our rich history, continued Furlong.
Des plus brillants exploits was also revealed today as the French motto for the 2010 Winter Games. While the French and English mottos are different, they are drawn from the same inspiration. Des plus brillants exploits references the pinnacle of achievement and the extraordinary feats of human endeavour that will occur, both for the athletes and for everyone involved in staging the 2010 Winter Games, said Furlong.
What better metaphor for the incredible achievements of the worlds best athletes than the heart itself? Furlong continued. And perhaps most importantly, the mottos describe the pride that results from outstanding achievement, be it an athletes performance of a lifetime or the valuable contribution of a dedicated volunteer. Theres a champion in everybody and the mottos invite everyone to step up to their own podium and give their very best through the once-in-a-lifetime experience of the 2010 Winter Games.
I think With Glowing Hearts works no matter where you are coming from. Its about being proud and working hard, said Nathalie Lambert, a four-time Olympic medallist. Its about commitment, passion and dedication, and everybody has that when they make it to the Games. I think everyone will be inspired by that motto.
“Finding the perfect motto for the Olympic Games is one of the great challenges Organizing Committees face,” said Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). “It may be the last inspirational words an athlete reads on the field of play before their performance of a lifetime, or the first celebratory words they see when stepping onto the medal podium. It should both welcome visitors from around the world and motivate an army of volunteers. With Glowing Hearts is an inspired motto choice and we commend VANOC on selecting a motto that delivers on all of these counts and invites the world to share in these time-honoured words from Canada’s national anthem.”

Thornton or Iginla would be my guess.
EDIT: Ming, the captain in Torino was Sakic, not Iginla.

The opening ceremonies will be indoors for the first time, so how would anyone be able to see the lighting of the Olympic torch live? A torch can’t be indoors!
I’m sure they have it figured out. you will just have to wait and see!

for men's soccer
Because they're not gonna go and jam in a few hundred qualifier games right before the world cup because all the players playing in the world cup play in their own professional teams (ex; barcelona, ac milan, real madrid, liverpool). So they spread the qualifying games out over 2 years so that those players can play both international and professional soccer.

The 2010 Winter Olympics organization in Vancouver has been running an active recruitment campaign for volunteers to work at the 2010 Winter Olympics in this city. It has been making wide use of the media in different forms.
Volunteer positions at Olympic Games are considered desirable opportunities as far volunteer work is concerned.
Volunteers notoriously are often robbed and put in danger. Those asked to work on security frequently are the individuals who have their security taken from them, being put in danger themselves beyond what could normally and reasonably be expected from such a position.
Will volunteers deliberately be put in danger at this event?
Please cite your sources to support your claim that "Volunteers notoriously are often robbed and put in danger. Newspaper articles, magazine articles, web sites, blogs, police reports — *something*.
